Presentation Evening 2011

On Friday 4 February 2011 all the various certificates gained by last year’s Upper Sixth and Year 11 students were officially presented. This was a long awaited event, after the heavy snowfall in December forced the scheduled evening to be postponed. The event also included a celebration of the achievements of students throughout the school and two students from each current Year Group 7-11 were presented with Headteacher’s Achievement Awards.

The evening opened with two rousing songs from the school’s Barbershop Group, a repeat performance after their highly successful entertainment at our Christmas Concert. Mr Royle welcomed everyone and then gave an amusing, and sometimes revealing, talk about the differences in the opportunities and experiences in schools today compared with those when he himself was at school. Mr Royle then presented the certificates to the students and the awards that recognise special achievements at Highdown.

Unfortunately, a few of the Prize winners were unable to attend the evening, but everyone enjoyed listening to the teachers’ words of praise for the individuals and working out their identity.

The Sixth Form Award winners were:

Humanities Award Steven Plows
World Languages Award Catherine Owen
English Award Nina Markovic-Obiago
Science Award Catherine Latto
Mathematics Award Saskia Clarke
Business and Computing Award Michael Friedrich
Physical Education Award Imogen Collins
Expressive Arts Award Andrew Baird
Leadership Award Jack Sealey
Headteacher’s Award Russell Blackwell
Academic Excellence at GCSE Award Saskia Clarke
Academic Excellence at ‘A’ Level Award Joshua Stainthorp

The Achievement Awards were given to students who had been identified as having made exceptional progress since the start of the academic year. The winners were:

Year 7 Aishwarya Shah Owen Parr
Year 8 Lucy O’Farrelly Oliver Taylor
Year 9 Ruby Jones Ronald Shearman
Year 10 Jasmine Long Sam Lee
Year 11 Emma Bingham James Kemp

All students who received an award were also presented with an engraved paperweight as a memento, together with a book voucher and their award certificate.

Congratulations to all these deserving award winners and all the students who achieved success in their external examinations last summer.
