What do I need to know or be able to do before taking the course?
The new Music Technology Specification provides opportunities to embrace recent developments in the field. This new Music Technology specification involves a lot of practical work and encourages the cultivation of a wide range of skills. Students will have the opportunities to:

Assessment

AS
Sequenced Realised Performance Based on a recording of a specified piece of music.
Multi-track Recording
Record a piece of own choice from Area of Study 2, with at least 8 live tracks.
Creative Sequenced Arrangement
Based on one of two prescribed stimuli supplied.
Listening and Analysing
A 1 3/4 hour listening exam, externally assessed.
Questions will be multiple choice, short answer and questions requiring a few sentences of continuous prose. They will assess knowledge of Area of Study 2, but understanding of Area of Study 1 is also required. |
A2
Sequenced Integrated Performance Based on a recording of a piece of music selected from a choice of two. It must contain a live audio recording of the vocals and if wanted, other live audio track(s), which must be integrated with the other, sequenced tracks.
Multi-track Recording
Select one recording topic from a choice of two and record a piece lasting 3-5 minutes. Recordings must have between 12 and 24 live tracks (no MIDI). Close-mic and direct-inject (DI) capture will be required.
Composing using Music Technology
Based on one of three prescribed briefs. Students will compose a piece lasting between 3-4 minutes.
Analysing and Producing
A 2-hour exam consisting of 2 sections.
Section A – will test musical understanding, ability to manipulate and correct recorded music and to write commentaries on technological processes. Section B – practical test - production of a balanced stereo mix. |

Career Opportunities
Apart from being a useful qualification if you want to pursue a career in recording/sound engineering, TV, Sound, Film and commercial composition, this course gives you an excellent insight into the commercial music industry. Also other career paths look for creative subjects when selecting candidates e.g. Law, Management.
